Did you know that oral bacteria can cause abscesses in your brain? If you’ve ever seen a medical drama, this might sound like it was ripped straight from the writers’ room. However, the science is real. Recent research has uncovered a surprising link between oral bacteria and this rare but serious condition. Here’s what the research found, and why it matters for your oral hygiene routine.
What the Research Found
A study from the University of Plymouth examined the records of 87 patients hospitalized with brain abscesses. Researchers found that patients whose symptoms couldn’t otherwise be explained were about three times more likely to have oral bacteria present in their samples.
The bacterium in question was Streptococcus anginosus, a germ commonly associated with dental infections. The findings suggest that in cases where a brain abscess has no obvious cause, the person’s mouth might be the source of infection.
How Could Oral Bacteria Reach the Brain?
Your mouth is home to hundreds of different kinds of bacteria, most of which are harmless when managed properly. However, untreated dental infections, gum disease, and even everyday inflammation can allow bacteria to enter your bloodstream. From there, in rare cases, they can travel through your body, even as far as your heart, lungs, or your brain, triggering a serious infection.
Why This Matters for Prevention
Fortunately, brain abscesses caused by oral bacteria are rare, but the research surrounding their connection with oral health is still startling. If you want to protect your mouth and your mind, the best defense is to brush twice a day, floss daily, and see your dentist. Visiting them at least twice a year is the best way to catch infections before they spread. Checkups look for issues on and beneath the surface of your smile, while cleanings keep plaque and tartar from building up and harming your oral health.
If you’re experiencing tooth pain, swelling, or any sign of infection, don’t wait it out. The science is out, and it says that regular preventive care can keep your smile and your overall health safe and sound.
