If you’ve been told you need a root canal, one of the first questions that likely comes to mind is: “How long will this take?” This is a valid concern, especially if you’re trying to plan around work, family, or other commitments. But the truth is, several factors play a role in determining how much time you’ll spend at your root canal appointment, as well as how long your recovery might last. Here’s what you need to know.
How Long Does a Root Canal Typically Take?
Not all root canals are the same, and the amount of time your procedure takes largely depends on which tooth is being treated and how many roots it has. Front teeth, like incisors, typically have just one root and can often be treated during a shorter appointment. Molars, on the other hand, usually have two to four roots, meaning more canals that need to be cleaned out and sealed, which naturally takes more time for your dentist. If multiple teeth need root canals, it will also add to the total treatment time.
All of that said, on average, a root canal appointment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes, though more complex cases may require additional time or even a follow-up visit. Front teeth tend to fall on the shorter end of that range, while molars often take longer due to their more complex root structure.
What Does the Recovery Timeline Look Like?
While the procedure itself may take around an hour, full recovery does take longer. Most patients experience mild soreness or sensitivity for a few days afterward, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and adjusting your diet to include soft foods. It’s common to feel back to normal within a few days, though it may take a bit longer for any lingering tenderness to fully resolve.
In many cases, a root canal is completed in a single, manageable visit, and the following recovery causes no real downtime. In any case, your dentist will review all of this information during your initial appointment so that you’re able to plan accordingly!
